Choosing to pursue nursing was a huge career change for me. I had a bachelor's in biology and was on the path to becoming a pharmacist. I felt a pull towards direct patient care in pediatrics and decided to act on it. The Future Nurse Leader Scholarship not only alleviated a portion of the financial burden of pursuing a second bachelor's degree but also provided a great deal of validation for me as a student. Validation that I’m on the right path, that I’m doing something right, and feelings of support for my future career. Recognition like this provides you with that extra morale boost needed to make it to the finish line. I ended up serving as president of our Student Nurses’ Association and graduating summa cum laude from Radford University. Joining our SNA and, by extension, the NSNA, was one of the best decisions I ever made. I’m very grateful for the scholarship I received from the FNSNA.
I’m currently working in the Pediatric ICU at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. We’re a level 1 pediatric trauma and burn center. It’s been a steep learning curve, but the support and resources for new nurses have been amazing. I’m learning so much each day and feel so privileged to be taking care of this patient population. What an honor it is to care for children and their families during some of the toughest moments of their lives. |
The FNSNA was created in 1969 to honor Frances Tompkins, the Association’s first Executive Director. Organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, the Foundation awards scholarships and other programs for student nurses. Scholarships help pay for tuition, books, and academic fees. This funding alleviates the stress and burden of rising tuition and decreases the amount of student loan debt.
Since 1974, FNSNA has awarded over $12 million in scholarships to undergraduate student nurses.
Contributions to the FNSNA are tax-deductible. The Foundation is organized as a 501 (C) (3) charitable foundation.
As the US approaches a serious shortage of registered nurses, funding is needed now more than ever to help students graduate on time and enter the nursing workforce. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 370,000 new nurses will be needed in the workforce by 2028. This shortage impacts not only impacts the lives of nursing students nationwide, but also impacts the quality of care patients receive in this country. Please help us address the impending nursing shortage by supporting nursing students with scholarship funding to continue their education.
